Прилагательному одинокий соответствуют английские solitary и lonely. Solitary означает 'одинокий – уединенный, изолированный': solitary life. Lonely употребляется главным образом в значении 'испытывающий чувство одиночества, страдающий от отсутствия близких людей': lonely old man. Solitary и lonely могут также употребляться для характеристики места: lonely означает 'отдаленный'; solitary часто имеет значение 'мало посещаемый'.
